			He works the Bar most evenings, armor polished to a shine that seems to defy however many rounds someone's bought him, and he never seems to actually be drinking. He keeps a battered ledger tucked under one arm, names and dates in a careful hand, every porter and torch bearer and quartermaster he's ever placed accounted for. He asks after them. Not out of duty, out of habit, the way you'd ask after family. More than one hero has been surprised to learn Barnaby remembers exactly how their last hire turned out, months later, unprompted.

			He takes the work seriously in a way that catches people off guard. To Barnaby, a hired hand isn't lesser company for a quest, they're someone's kin, someone's neighbor, walking into danger for a wage, and he intends to make sure whoever hires them does right by them. Heroes who treat their hirelings well find Barnaby warmer every time they come back. Heroes who don't find him considerably less helpful the second time around, though he's too much of a gentleman to ever quite say why.
