A Rival is someone from a Hero's past whose history with the Hero has curdled into competition, resentment, or worse. Every Hero rolls their own Rival during Hero Generation ([[HERO-420|Table 420: Rival]]), determining who the Rival is, the relationship that once bound the two of them together, and the reason that bond soured.<br />

A Rival is not a monster to be hunted down. They surface on their own, drawn into the Hero's path through Town Local Gathering encounters and dungeon Rival Encounters, carrying the friction of their shared history into each meeting.<br />
<br />
Every Rival brings their own temperament to the rivalry, from merely Friendly needling to something Obsessive. Some Rivals only ever needle and provoke. Others are dangerous enough to fight, and carry a full Confrontation combat form for that purpose.<br />
