No two accounts of Jimothy agree on where he came from, only that he was always already here. Farmers swear he denned in their walls a decade before their children were born. Old Cobb Greyhide swears the creek was named after his splashing, not the other way around. He is small enough to vanish into a coat pocket and clever enough to empty one on the way in.

He looks as though someone tried to fold a raccoon in half and gave up halfway through. His spine sits short and tight, pulling his round little body into something closer to a loaf than a beast, stub legs working double-time to carry a shape that by all rights shouldn't move as fast as it does. Nobody in Vulture's Vineyard remembers deciding he was worth watching. They just remember noticing they couldn't stop.

He turns up in backyards, behind the winery's grape stakes, on the Lodge's back step at dusk, always somewhere a door was about to be left unlatched. Half the village claims to have the best Jimothy story. The other half is lying and everyone knows it. Someone has already carved his shape into a fence post down by the gatehouse.

Corner him and he bites like any wild thing would. Leave him be, or better, leave something shiny in his path, and the Vineyard remembers why they call him Beloved.
