Cellarkeeper's Ghost
Nobody remembers his name, only his apron, the same one he wore the season everything stopped. He was the one who nailed the boards over that back archway, and by every account he meant to take them down again once things were safe. He never got the chance, or never believed it was time, and the years since have blurred which.
He tends the rack the way he always did, straightening labels no one else can see crooked, polishing bottles no living hand set down. He does not remember dying. He remembers only the promise, made to a man whose face he can still describe in perfect, aching detail, and the certainty that breaking it would undo everything the winery ever was.
Reach for what he's guarding and he will ask you, gently at first, to leave it be. Reach again, and the gentleness runs out.
