The Older Phrasing
Thaddeus stops mid-sentence. You have used the older phrasing, the one that fell out of common human use about three centuries ago and never once fell out of use among your people, and he has spent forty years reading it off pages without ever hearing anyone say it aloud.
He does not ask how old you are. He asks what you have read. The conversation runs long, costs him an hour he had no intention of giving away, and ends with him going to the cabinet behind the six-fingered statue instead of the shelf by the door.
