The Stool or the Knife
Armondo looks up from the board, looks at you, and pulls out a second stool without being asked. Then he pulls out a knife as well and sets it beside the stool, handle toward you, and goes back to what he was doing.
"Two ways to be in my kitchen, Dwa," he says. "Both of 'em honest."
He does not say which he would prefer. He has fed enough of your people over the years to know the answer changes by the day and none of them appreciate being guessed at.
If you take the stool: You eat what comes off the board as it comes off the board, and he talks the whole time, and somewhere in the middle of it his jokes go quiet and his eyes go somewhere far away and then come back. He does not explain and you do not ask. When you leave he presses something small and warm into your hand, an old campaign medal he has carried since long before the Lodge existed, and calls it payment for the company. Gain one Friendship Medal at no cost.
If you take the knife: You work the prep table beside him for the length of a shift, no wasted motion, no wasted ingredients, and he corrects you exactly twice and thanks you once. The Lodge pays its kitchen hands the same whoever they are, and Armondo makes sure it is never shorted for company. Gain 25 (rc).
