Boots stay in the pack out here. Barefoot means you feel the road before you see it, every rut and warm patch and buried stone underfoot telling you more than the empty houses ever would, and something in the packed dirt today is telling you a story the road doesn't usually tell.
A patch just ahead is warmer than the shade should allow, like something passed through recently and left the ground remembering it.
