Dicey Dangers, The Creepy Creature of Vulture's Vineyard

Gazebo

At the far edge of the grass field stands an old white gazebo, open on all sides, its wood soft and grey under a coat of paint that someone keeps fresh even though no one's ever seen them do it. Hanging baskets of flowers ring the eaves, still blooming, still watered, and the whole structure catches the breeze off the pass so that it's always a few degrees cooler in its shade than out. It is, by any reasonable measure, the loveliest spot in Vulture's Vineyard.

Sit in it a while, though, and the loveliness starts to feel arranged, like a room kept ready for a guest who left a long time ago and might still come back. The flowers never drop a petal on the floorboards. The bench is always clean. And whichever way you turn to take in the view, the gazebo seems to have been built facing the Lodge, so that no matter where you sit, you end up looking back at it.
