Quest
Set Up
Gabriazar lowers his voice, glancing around like the two of you are sharing a secret the whole town isn't already half aware of. "There's a widow in town, dear thing, doesn't deserve half of what's happened to her. Lost her husband's signet ring somewhere in the old cellars below, years back, during the fighting. I promised her I'd see it returned. Alas, urgent business keeps pulling me away just when I'm needed most." He presses a hand to his chest, wounded by his own busy schedule. "But you. You look capable. Fetch the ring, and I'll see you're very well compensated. An evening's work, tops."
He has never named the widow. If asked, he changes the subject.
Quest Goal
Find the lost signet ring somewhere on Level 2 of the dungeon, and decide what to do with it once you have it.
Special Rules
- Once found, note each Clue on your Hero Sheet. When the Hero finds their 2nd unique Clue on Level 2, the next room they encounter is a collapsed storage vault instead of a normal room.
- The Vault: shelving long since caved in, barrels split and dry, everything under a thick coat of dust undisturbed by anyone in a very long time. Half-buried in the wreckage is a Vintner's Signet Ring, tarnished but intact.
- The ring is engraved on the inside of the band: "Girok Trebonk." Any Hero who has spoken with Grog Trebonk recognizes the name immediately. There is no widow. Gabriazar invented her.
- The Hero must choose what to do with the ring: return it to Gabriazar, as promised, or bring it directly to Grog Trebonk instead.
Objectives
- Hear Gabriazar's favor
- Find 2 unique Clues on Level 2
- Recover the Vintner's Signet Ring from the Vault
- Choose: deliver the ring to Gabriazar, or to Grog Trebonk
Rewards
If delivered to Gabriazar: he is overjoyed, closes his hand around the ring like it was always the important part, and presses a payment into yours that is somehow smaller than the "very well compensated" he promised. He assures you the widow will never forget your kindness. He does not say her name. You get the distinct feeling you never will.
If delivered to Grog Trebonk: Grog goes very still when he sees the ring, then very quiet. It's the first piece of his great-grandfather he's held that wasn't a story someone told him. He waives your tab at the Lodge for a while, and doesn't ask how you found it. Gabriazar, when he eventually hears, is briefly baffled, then delighted. "A test of character! Exactly as I orchestrated." He takes full credit and asks for nothing further.
Failure
There is no failing this Quest. If the ring is never found, Gabriazar shrugs it off within the week and has a new favor ready by the time you see him again. Somewhere below Vulture's Vineyard, Girok Trebonk's ring stays buried a while longer. Return to the Previous Table
