Wexley Carthorn
Wexley Carthorn has been hauling freight over the pass for twenty years, twice a month, every month, rain or shine or worse. A broad-shouldered human with a sun-cracked face and a voice built for shouting over wagon wheels, he's as much a fixture of the road as the mile markers, though he never stays anywhere longer than it takes to water his mules. His wagon is instantly recognizable: patched canvas, a horseshoe nailed above the driver's bench, and a team of mules groomed better than most people's children.
Wexley talks the way other men breathe, constantly and without visible effort, and he is constitutionally incapable of letting a listener leave before the story's done. Every tale he tells features at least one mule by name, whether the mule matters to the story or not, and over twenty years there have been a great many mules. But buried in the chatter is real knowledge: he knows every road, bridge, toll, and shortcut within a hundred miles, what goods fetch what price in which town, and which stretches of road folk have started avoiding without quite saying why.
He likes Vulture's Vineyard, always has, and he'll tell you so at length. But if you listen carefully, you'll notice he never overnights here anymore. He times his runs to be through the pass and well down the far side before dark, and if you ask him why, it's the one subject that makes the talking stop.
Ask Wexley About the Road
Wexley shares his road gossip freely with anyone willing to stand still for it. Roll 1 time on this table.
