Dwarven Work, Still Holding
You do not need to look twice. The springs seated in the barrel bottoms are cut to a tolerance no vineyard cooper ever asked for, and the gearing behind them is stepped the way your own people step a gear, small teeth feeding large so the mechanism can wind slow and strike fast. Someone dwarven built this to hold, and it has been holding ever since.
Knowing the hand that made it, you have a moment to decide what that knowledge is worth to you.
If you read the rhythm: You know where the cycle wants to go before it goes there, and you move through the gaps rather than against them. This visit, the barrels run dry after the second round instead of the third.
If you pry a gear free: You get a hand in past the firing line and work one gearwheel off its post, bronze, fine toothed, and still warm from the spring behind it. No dwarf in this town would fence a piece like that, so you don't either. The guild stamp worked into its underside is good anywhere kin gather, and the smith at the forge counts out 40 (rc) without asking a single question. The trap itself is untouched and runs its full three rounds.
