Dicey Dangers, Core Rule Game by Joel Hills

Inscribed

Inscribed is a Chronicle keyword and a quest flag. It marks a hero whose name has been written in the Alma Primis, the book The Invisible Ones use to record the history they have shaped.

An Inscribed hero is being watched. The Invisible Ones have decided this person is worth noting. They are waiting to see if the hero deserves the page.

How to Gain Inscribed

The Inscribed keyword is offered at specific moments across adventures when The Invisible Ones open the Alma Primis and invite a hero to write their name. The hero may choose to accept or refuse. The Invisible Ones do not inscribe anyone who does not choose it.

Mechanical Effects

While Inscribed, the hero has an active quest: perform one act before the adventure ends that is significant enough to be recorded. Mark the quest on the hero sheet when accepted.

When the hero performs a qualifying act, mark the quest complete. The Inscribed keyword remains on the hero sheet until the reward is collected in Town.

Qualifying Acts

The following acts qualify as significant enough to be recorded in the Alma Primis:

  • Defeat a boss monster alone without using any Deity Powers
  • Complete a secret objective not listed in the mission goals
  • Spare an enemy that had the hero reduced to 1 HP
  • Solve a puzzle or challenge on the first attempt without retreating
  • Complete a rescue mission without losing any of the people being rescued
  • Perform an act of sacrifice that costs the hero something significant with no guaranteed reward

The specific list of qualifying acts may be expanded by the adventure content where Inscribed is offered.

Completing the Inscribed Quest

Return to Town with Inscribed marked complete. The Inscribed keyword is removed and replaced by Chutzpah.

If the adventure ends without a qualifying act being performed, the Inscribed keyword is removed without reward. The Invisible Ones note that the hero was not ready.

Lore

The Alma Primis is written in an ink that changes color depending on which of the Seven was most active at the time. No hero has ever seen their own entry. The Invisible Ones do not share the record. They only open it.

Being Inscribed does not mean the hero is important. It means the Invisible Ones think they might become important. There is a difference.
