Wick Glimmerdown

Wick Glimmerdown is the master lampwright of The Bottled Star, an elderly Gnome with a fringe of white hair, hands steady as a level, and spectacles tinted so dark they're nearly black, worn at noon, at midnight, and by all accounts to bed. He speaks rarely and only about the work, but the work speaks plainly enough: the Glimmerdowns have been lampwrights for eleven generations, and Wick is widely held to be the finest of all of them. His racks carry arms and armor charged with living energy, humming, glowing, weighted with force, for any adventurer who plans to fight in the dark and would rather bring their own light.

He has one compulsion he doesn't bother hiding: Wick diagnoses light. Walk up with a lantern, a torch, a candle stub, and he'll take it from your hands uninvited, hold it to his black spectacles, and mutter its age, its health, and how long it has left, right down to the hour. He is never wrong, and he never explains how he does it. Three times a day, without fail, he climbs the wagon's long ladder to tend the master lamp at its crown, alone, and whatever he does up there takes exactly as long as it takes.

Ask him why the Bottled Star never stops traveling, why a wagon this famous never settles in a city that would pay it a fortune to stay, and Wick will look at you for a long moment through those black lenses, and go back to work.
