Slower Than a Human Life
The town treats the scaffolding as a joke that has gone on too long. You do not. You have seen buildings like this one before, and you know that the ones that get finished are finished exactly this way, slowly, by people who will not be alive to see the roof close.
The hand-lettered donor board beside the steps runs back further than the oldest human in town. A mason working the south wall notices where your eyes have settled and waits, because he has clearly been waiting a while for someone to look at it properly.
You have an hour before the light goes.
If you read the board: Near the bottom, in ink gone brown, is a name you knew when the ink was wet. The mason tells you what everyone here has forgotten, that the entry came with coin set aside for whoever outlived the memory of it. He has always assumed whoever came asking would be one of your people; nobody else would still be counting. He counts out 25 (rc) and seems relieved to finally be rid of it.
If you take up a trowel: You spend the hour on the south wall setting stone with him, and he does not once try to make conversation, which you appreciate. Add 50 (rc) to your Total Donated (rc), credited as labor rather than coin.
