Disfavored

Disfavored is a Special keyword and a character trait. It is not a status — it does not expire after a set number of days. It remains on the hero sheet until actively removed.

A hero who carries Disfavored has been returned from death by Demetra's power. Their name has been written into the Alma Mortis, her personal record of every soul she has received. Demetra has a claim on them. They are, in a sense, already in her record — they simply have not arrived yet.

How to Gain Disfavored

Disfavored is applied immediately when a hero or another hero uses Raise Dead on them. It cannot be avoided as part of that power's cost.

Mechanical Effects

  • A Disfavored hero cannot use Raise Dead again until the keyword is removed.
  • Certain rooms, NPCs, and event table results across all adventures check for the Disfavored keyword and trigger alternate text or outcomes when it is present.

Removing Disfavored

Disfavored is removed by one of the following during the Town Phase:

Complete a Demetra quest objective -- Certain quests tied to Demetra (recovering brown scales, escorting a dying NPC, visiting a death site) specifically remove the Disfavored keyword on completion.

Pay a gold tithe at a death temple -- The cost is set by the specific temple encountered in each adventure.

The Artifact Item Brown Scale of Demetra can also remove Disfavored immediately without a temple visit.

Lore

Those who carry Disfavored are marked in ways most living beings cannot perceive. Brown scales have been seen on the ground near them, placed there and then gone. Animals sometimes avoid them. NPCs who know what the mark means treat them with a particular kind of respect — the kind given to someone who has already been counted.

Demetra is patient. She does not pursue the Disfavored. She simply notes that the debt exists and waits for it to be settled.
