The vines themselves are old and gnarled, their twisted limbs heavy with clusters of ripe grapes. However, the idyllic scene is marred by the presence of vultures circling overhead, casting a shadow of death and decay over the once-peaceful vineyard. At times, the vintners who work in the field have to clean up the stray bones and carcasses left behind by the scavenging birds. Though the vineyard produces a substantial supply of wine, few are brave enough to venture into the fields alone, for fear of the ominous presence that the circling vultures bring.

Dicey Dangers, The Creepy Creature of Vulture's Vineyard Game by Joel Hills

Field of Grape Vines

Time-Icon.png North of the Ancient Stone Arch, ten acres of grape vines climb the lower slope in rows that haven't known a vintner's hand in years. The vines are old and gnarled, heavy with fruit nobody picks, and here and there the neat rows break and heal around half-buried stones that are too square to be natural. After hard rain, the soil gives things up: a green-crusted buckle, a rusted blade-length of metal, once in a while something pale that the vultures take before anyone looks too closely.

The vultures are always here. They have wheeled over this ground since the war that gave the vineyard its dead, and Vulture's Vineyard took its name from them the way you'd name a place for its oldest family. The locals never harm them, "they tended the fallen when no one else would," the saying goes, but even the locals notice the birds are fat for scavengers in a quiet valley, and that they never seem to go hungry.

Low paths run pressed through the rows at angles no vintner would walk, and in places the grapes have been stripped, only ever below knee height.
